**Alvin Tan left his S$10,000-a-month software engineering job, partly because he feared the rise of AI could eventually put his job at risk.** Rather than wait to see if he would be retrenched, he became a hawker selling Hokkien mee, earning about S$3,000 to S$4,000 a month. Alvin says despite earning less and working longer hours, running his own business gives him greater control over his future.
